I want something that gives me a minimum amount of side effects, something convenient and comfortable. I don't plan on having another child for at least the next 3-5 years.

I've used Ortho-tri-cyclin low, Yazmin, the nuva ring, the patch, and depo.

I think the Ortho-tri-cyclin low was the best. I didn't notice any mood changes, and it didn't make me feel any different.

Yazmin made me quite moody and it also caused nausea.

The nuva ring disgusted me, you have one ring, and you keep it "in there" all month, you insert it and remove it yourself.

I also had problems with the patch. It can cause blood clots. It reminded me of a bandaid. You put it on for a week, and lint sticks to it and it looks dirty. It would also come off or stick to my jeans.

The depo shot has many side effects. It can also cause increased appitite, which in turn makes you gain weight. After prolonged use it causes bone marrow loss. Possible Side effects:: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/depoprovera_ad.htm

Condoms are also an option. They can break, and they are inconveinent. But they have no side effects.

I've heard horror stories about the IUD, but I've never tried it.

There are also::

Spermicides

Contraceptive Sponge

Diaphragm

The Rhythm Method

Just to name a few.

Talk to your doctor about it, and have him/her go over the pros and cons of multiple birth control methods. If you're still breast feeding, it's not recomended to use oral contraceptives. You and your doctor should decide what is best for you.

I was on the birth control patch for a year and a half, got off, got pregnant, and then was on it again for another year and a half. It worked great for me. I liked it because it was easy to remember. I didn't really have any side effects from it, plus I smoked while I was on it and I am fine. And I got pregnant right away after getting off of it. The first time it only took about 4 months and this time I took it off and two weeks later I got pregnant.

My sisters both use the ring.. and they LOVE it. You put it in once a month, take it out for a week.. and viola! If i weren't going to be breastfeeding soon, i would totally use it... unless there is a low estrogen one! Other than that.. depo is the "easiest" because of the few times you need to take it each month. Good luck!

Have an IUD inserted. It is very safe. It is not like the ones from the 70's that had their problems. They last up to 5 years or 10 years according to which one you have inserted. Talk to your OB/GYN.
