MEASURING 30 WEEKS WHEN I'M 35?
2008-10-15 09:02:12 UTC
We have our dates correct as we were planning to become pregnant, however a trip to the hospital yesterday discovered that I am only measuring 30 weeks when I'm 35. does anyone know what this may mean please? we have to go back next tuesday for scans etc but would just like some information that may help put our minds at ease. thank you!

The same thing just happened to me - at my 28-week checkup I measured only 24 weeks. The due date was confirmed at a 13 week ultrasound and a 20 week ultrasound, by two different doctors (regular ob and perinatologist), so we knew that the date wasn't off by a month. My regular ob performed another full-anatomy ultrasound to make sure that the baby was growing and developing correctly. Possible causes of measuring small (aside from a small baby) would be: low volume of amniotic fluid; scar tissue from a past abdominal surgery restricting growth; wrong due date (not likely); tight abdominal muscles; developmental delay. Fortunately, everything is fine.

The sonogram showed that the development/maturity of bones and organs is consistent with a 28-week fetus, although the size is more like that of a 24-25 week fetus. I'm really healthy and the baby is perfectly healthy - she's just small. (I also have tight abdominal muscles that are still holding everything in.) The small size is not a big surprise, because I'm small (5'3"), my husband isn't a big guy (he's 5'7"), we were both small babies, and we have LOTS of very petite people in our families. It would be a huge surprise if this girl wasn't tiny! My doctor told us that the baby will probably be between 6 and 6.5 pounds at full term. That's smaller than average, but still well within the healthy range.

As long as you're healthy and the baby has seemed healthy in previous check-ups, try not to worry.

Don't freak, there may be a simple explanation for this. I had the exact opposite problem. My baby measures 3 weeks bigger and then they did a scan and discovered she really was 3 week bigger, then I went back to the doc 2 weeks later and I was measuring small. The doc said it is because the closer you get to your due date the further down the baby moves (dropping) but gradually and can make your belly seem flatter and scew the measurement. My baby is still big, but she is head down now and as far down as she can go even though I haven't noticed the "big drop" Dont worry, it could mean nothing, they will just do a scan to be sure. Good luck

It may mean the baby is small or it may just mean he or she was curled up and measured smaller during your appointment. Either way, the baby will most likely be fine, and getting a scan is the best thing for both of you to work out why you were measuring small. Try not to stress because anxiety can affect the baby. Your baby is in safe hands with the medical professionals, so there is probably nothing to worry about at all.

It could be nothing or it could mean the baby is small. However I would not worry about this until you go for a scan. That really is the only way they can know if the child is developing normally or not. I know it's early but maybe you started to drop already? That can make you measure on the small side. So don't worry until you know something for sure. It's probably nothing.

I just thought that would have meant that you're smaller than average, which is probably why they gave you a scan, just to see if the baby is growing how it should be. I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant with twins, and I always seem to measure 4 weeks in front, which I've been told is normal for a twin pregnancy. Maybe your baby is just smaller than average. That's not a bad thing. They probably have given you a scan to check that everything's going just fine. I wouldn't worry so much.

Well they usually allow 3 cm either way so 3 cm more than your weeks or 3 cm less than your weeks which is prob y they want to do a scan to make sure the baby is growing ok. Don't worry tho its probably nothing, the baby may just of been lying in a funny position when they measured! hope it goes ok xx

The same thing happened to my friend around the same time in her pregnancy, she was measuring a few weeks further along and the dates were right. Nothing was wrong with her or the baby, no diabetes, nothing. The baby just ended up being 10 pounds at birth.

Ultrasound is a wager at super. 2 unique extreme risk OB's were over and decrease than with each and each my boys. My first was once estimated at over 10 pounds and was once certainly 8 pounds, 4 oz.. My 2nd was once estimated at 5 pounds 6 oz..and weighed 7 pounds 12 oz.. maximum little ones lungs are outfitted at 36 weeks regardless of if now no longer commonly. Its super to maintain your toddler in there until eventually a minimum of 37-38 weeks if achieveable.

I measured small almost my entire pregnancy. The had me come in constantly. I did end up delivering early but that was because of loss of amniotic fluid and also my son was brea\ech. He was born 6 lbs 2oz and 21 inches long at almost 36 weeks. He is now 2 1/2 in 90 percentile for height and is average weight. It's hard to do but try not to stress yourself out too much. You are almost there.

When my mother in law was pregnant with my husband, she had inter uterine deficiencies. As a result my husband was smaller than he should have been, so they simply moved his due date a month, and he was healthy enough to be born. He was still born vaginally and he was still on the small side, but he was healthy and that's all that matters. Good luck and congratulations!

you could just have a smaller baby. every baby and preganacy is different, so just because you are mesuring smaller than normal doesnt nesisarily mean something is wrong. and if the dr was really worried about something they wouldnt have waited till next week for more scans

Either dates are wrong or the baby might just be really small. I thought I had my dates down. They were wrong. I was always off by 3 weeks.

It means absolute nothing! seriously... I was measuring like you and they said that my due date still remains the same as I know my LMP because it was a planned pregnancy.

But of course it all depends on the doctor. GL

The measuring is incorrect whether it is done by a scan or a measuring tape. Only use the first day of your last period to determine gestational age. Take the first day of your last period and count forward 42 weeks if you are a first-time mother. Best, G
