Question:
Roller Coasters and Pregnancy?

It's common knowledge that pregnant women are not supposed to ride roller coasters. There are even warning signs at theme parks.

What happens to a pregnant woman and/or her baby on a roller coaster though? I mean, what would happen if I didn't even know I was pregnant and rode roller coasters all day long?

I'm asking because my husband and I plan on going to Hard Rock Theme Park and Hershey Park over the summer and I have every intention of riding roller coasters and water rides. I'm not on the pill anymore. We're just trying to let my cycles get back to normal before we TTC. What if I didn't even know I was pregnant and I rode one?

If you rode on a RC while pregnant, you could seriously be risking miscarriage, because the yolk sac could tear off your uterus and cause you to have a miscarriage. So if you're TTC I would honestly recommend not to ride on a RC; however, if this trip is planned out already and you want to go & have a good time, then put off TTC until you come back from your trip.

Good luck!

Since I did not know that I was pregnant till I was almost four months along, combined with the fact that I am an adrenaline junkie and love rides: I went on many roller coaster rides before I knew that I was pregnant. I spent a couple of days at six flags when I must have been two months pregnant. I know there is a reason why pregnant women aren't suppose to ride rides, but I did and nothing happened to me or my beautiful child.

On the same note, if I had thought that I could have been pregnant, I don't think that I would have gone on the rides. Talk to your doctor and see what he/she says.

Early pregnancy is not quite so much of an issue, kinda of like the oh no I had to glasses of wine with dinner last week and I just found out today I am pregnant chances are everything will be fine. However further along the restraints pressing agianst your stomach and the garring of the coaster can be hazardous to the pregnant woman. Not to mention that it comes down to liability if anything was to occur they could be held liabable without such postings.

Use your best judgement and enjoy what may be possibly your last summer as a couple.

It's fine. It won't hurt you in the very beginning which is the first 1-6 weeks of being pregnant when you may or may not even realize your pregnant yet. It's when your in your 3rd month on it is very dangerous on the baby. The motion and jerkiness of the rollercoaster will make you have a miscarriage or mess up the development of the baby causing parts of the baby to not develop properly.

Such as, fingers, toes, arms, legs, brain, ears.

That's why it is very important for a women not to ride rides when she is pregnant. It will either cause her to lose the baby all together or the baby will have things wrong with it.

I would suggest taking a pregnancy test before you go. If it says negative, then your fine to go on the rides.

early pregnancy is no big deal but when I went to a theme park at 28 weeks, I went on the ferris wheel thinking it wouldnt be so bad but my center of gravity had shifted and the whole ride was a nightmare. I don't suggest it for pregnant women.

I am sure that if you are ttc, you will know when you are pregnant right away. If you are before your missed period, the roller coaster ride wont change a thing.

I think if you didn't know you were pregnant....then you would be so early I don't know that it would do anything to the baby...BUT I AM NOT A DR! You should ask your dr...

But I do know that my sister in law went on rides while she was pregnant....all day long on coasters...she said it made her VERY sick but her daughter is fine....

Perhaps just buy a test to take the day you go and that morning you can make sure your test isn't coming back positive!

You should be fine if there has been no bleeding.

The reason you shouldn't is because it can cause miscarriage or early labor depending on how far along you are. Before anymore trips to the theme park, find out if your pregnant or not.

Its the jerking and twisting motions that could damage the embryo. I would take test right before just to be sure. Only you can tell if you feel different, if you do then trust your instincts!!

I wouldn't worry about it. I went to the amusement park on July 1st, found out I was pregnant July 3rd, and the only thing that happened is she is a nine year old thrill seeker!!!

Well I can tell you from experience. I rode a couple rollercoasters (4 years ago) when I didn't know I was pregnant. Then when I found out I was pregnant at 7 weeks I also found out I had a miscarraige. My suggestion is find out first for sure if you are pregnant or not.

edit- to the women who said if you are early in pregnancy do not worry about it- they are wrong!!

Not worth the risk...early miscarriage could occur.

I am sure that early on you would be okay. It's more for women that are father along. The constant jerking back and forth can cause damage to the placenta and in turn cause miscarriage.

I personaly wouldnt risk it. I would try to avoid becoming pregnant the month before you go. Better safe than sorry.

Doctors are more concerned about it later in your pregnancy.

However, I would use protection till the summer is done to be safe.

Why would you risk your fetu's safety for a thrill? Until you know for sure, just find other amusements.

If your that early in your pregnancy I wouldn't worry much about it. I think they are more worried about woman that are farther along.
