I am pregnant with my second (we are so excited) and we have had a hard time finding the exact answer, I keep on getting different answers when I google this! I'm only 4.5 weeks along and I wanted to know when the first ultrasound is usually given? Also when do you usually get to hear the babies heart beat for the first time?
Also, side question, my son is two, how is the best way to tackle explaining to Rocco he will have a little brother/sister soon? Are there any good books I can read to him?

It really depends on so many things. On average, you can hear your baby's heartbeat for the first time around 10-12 weeks. But factors like your weight, the position of your uterus, and the position of the baby can affect that.

As for ultrasound, that's really up to your practitioner. Some will routinely order an ultrasound to date a pregnancy at 8-10 weeks. Others will do an ultrasound at 18-22 weeks, as part of an anatomy scan. And others won't do an ultrasound at all unless they suspect something wrong with the baby or the mother. There are some who will do very early ultrasounds (less than 8 weeks) on certain high risk moms.

Hmm, telling a toddler about a new sibling can be really hard. It might be best to wait until you're showing a bit, in order for it to sink in for him. But if you suspect he might pick up on the changes that are bound to come, you can try telling him earlier. But be prepared that the fact that a baby is coming might not sink in for him until your new one is born.

Best of luck, and congrats!

My OB doctor won't do ultrasounds before 6 - 7 weeks because before this the baby is usually too small to see through ultrasounds. We were able to hear the heartbeat at the 6 1/2 week ultrasounds.

The first ultrasound is done at the first appointment to confirm & date the pregnancy

The heart beat can be heard as early as 6 weeks but most woman don't hear it until anytime between 8-11 weeks!

I am ten weeks along and they are checking for the heart beat and doing the first ultrasound at 12 weeks, I think that is when they usually do it.

& Just tell him he is going to have a big responsibility when his baby brother/sister comes along. He has to help take care of him or her and is going to have to make sure he sets a good example.

:) Good luck!

The heart doesnt start beating until 5.5 to 6 weeks, i saw my babys heart beating at exactly 6 weeks but i didnt get to hear, they can however use the ultrasound machine to calculate how fast it is and they'll tell you. I had scans at 9.5 weeks and 12 weeks and i was able to hear it and they again told me how fast it was. You probably wont get a scan until youre 12 weeks, the only reason i got scans before then was because they needed to date the pregnancy as there was dating issues and because of heavy spotting. good luck x

We had our first ultra sound at 11 weeks and you could see what looked like a baby. Before that I'm sure the baby just looks like a bean. We didn't get to hear his heart beat until like 14 weeks, mainly because of how appointments went, but you could see the heartbeat on the early ultra sound.
