The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is found in pregnant women. In the 1920's it was discovered that a rabbit's ovaries would show some changes if injected with a urine containing hCG. It is a misconception that the rabbit died if the woman was pregnant, because they had to kill all the rabbits to test their ovaries, so essentially, ALL the rabbits died.

It isn't JUST an expression. Up until the 1960's pregnancy testing was done on live animals (rabbits). if the female was positive the chemical reaction from the hormone killed the rabbit.
