Best time is anywhere from 28-36 weeks for an accurate depiction of your baby. I am only 19 weeks, and I already had one as part of my gender scan. My little girl kinda looks like an alien because she doesn't have much meat on her but the images are amazing! Difference between 3D and 4D is time (as in, the fourth dimension is time). A 3D is the still shot, and a 4D is watching it move in real time. When you go for a 3D/4D ultrasound, it will be in 4D but all your still photos will be considered 3D. Good luck!

Congratulations :))

I have taken the following information from the Mums private ultrasound clinic Solihull England.

What is 4D ultrasound?

"4D" is shorthand for "four-dimensional"- the fourth dimension being time. As far as ultrasound is concerned, 4D Ultrasound is the latest ultrasound technology. 4D Ultrasound takes multiple 2-dimensional ultrasound images, creates a 3-dimensional image and adds the element of time to the process. The result: live action images of your unborn child or of any internal anatomy.

What are the advantages of the 4D technology?

In contrast to other 3D imaging diagnostic processes, 4D enables visualisation of internal anatomy moving in real-time. This is frequently used to look at the surface of the face or other fetal structures ("surface rendering") which is surrounded by amniotic fluid to give a life like image. This can make the image easier to understand. It is sometimes used to view fetal abnormalities, such as cleft lip, so that parents can recognise what the doctor is describing.

Are there any risks associated with 4D scanning

No. 3D and 4D Ultrasound both utilise sound waves to look inside the body, just the same way as ordinary 2 dimensional ultrasound.

Why do the 4D Ultrasound images have a golden hue?

Physicians have the option of selecting different tints in reviewing images. The golden hue is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and shows excellent shadows and highlights.

Can I always get a good image of my baby's face?

Often a good image can be obtained, but not always. To get an ideal surface rendered image, the surface must only have fluid around it. Sometimes the baby may put an arm in front of the face or may have part of the face resting against the wall of the uterus. At around 26 weeks, the chance of getting a better image is increased. At this stage the baby has developed some tissue between the skin and the bones of the face, as well as still having a reasonable volume of amniotic fluid around the baby.

I know this information to be accurate as I have used this clinic personally and I am now 29 weeks into my 4th pregnancy.

Wishing you the best of luck for a safe delivery.

A 3D scan is in color and a 4D scan is movement. When they do the 4D you can actually see your little one moving around. I went my first 3D scan at 29 weeks and it was amazing! I think you could go now and it would be good but I would wait until you're further along and she has plumped up some more.

28-32 weeks. That's when they actually look like a baby with chubby cheeks, but are still small enough to get good pictures. When you go under 28 weeks, the baby won't look much like what he/she is going to look like at birth. When you go over 32 weeks, it gets crowded and the baby may be in the same position covering his/her face. The difference between 3d and 4d is that the 4d scan moves. You can see your baby yawning, smiling, etc. as it happens!

The difference is that most 3D and 4D are not covered by insurance unless there is a medical reason to get one. I think you should wait until you are about 30 - 36 weeks along. At 24 weeks your baby is still developing and has not really had a chance to get her "look" yet. Be patient. I know it's tough but you will appreciate it more, the bigger the baby is.

I personally do not trust the 3d scan or the 4d. Im 8 months prego, and Im just as anxious to see what my baby girl is going to look like, but I think it would be more heart pleasing to wait. I mean, they are not as good with technology yet, I wouldnt want to be the mom who gets the message that this machine caused this to my child.

the best time would be around 30-34 weeks because they are starting to put on fat and filling out.

the difference with a 3D and 4D is that a 3D Scan is a singular photo where as 4D is a series of photos to make it look as though the baby is moving which is wat the 4th element (movement) is. The scan is 4D but the print outs are 3D

Ive never had one but a colleague of mine has. The photos are brilliant and very clear. Its like what you would see on a documentary on TV. However these scans come with a price and that is the reason why i didn't have one. I personally think its much nicer to wait for the surprise of seeing what your babys features; fingers, toes, nose etc are like too.

Hiya congrats!

Hmmm not sure about the difference tbh, but i know the best time to get it done is anywhere after 33 weeks if you want really good pics. I got a leaflet through the post from 'Baby Bond UK' and it said that. I was 35 weeks at the time and very tempted but didn't bother.

All the best with your pregnancy :)

i just had one at 24 weeks wasnt so clear so i got scheduled for 26 weeks came out perfect. its so amazing my baby was sucking her thumb and sticking her tounge out. they do 3d and 4d together. 4d is in "real time" which means you can see EVERY detail on baby.

my doc office told me after 28 weeks is the best time, baby is big enough to see stuff but not so big that it's all squished. I went for mine and the umbilical cord was in front of the face, that was all we could see, oh well. I have no idea what the difference is....

You can go now! :-)

I will have one at 17 weeks to determine gender.

The longer you wait into your pregnancy, the bigger the baby will be and the baby will be more "baby like" but you can go now if you're anxious.
