Question:
i need advices...? i am scared and worried...?
2008-08-20 20:33:38 UTC
i am now 28weeks pregnant. and the more i read books about pregnancy the more scared i am. i love eating sweets a lot. i love chocolates, cakes and ice cream. i always crave for it. i am worried that i might have gestational diabetis. Diabetis runs in my family and i love sweets i am afraid i might acquire it. i am afraid for my baby as well.
i even had this "one touch" self-test blood sugar. i test my self every now and then. the result was okay. i am wondering if that test is accurate. i always eat a lot of sweets and the result always turn out okay.
my next check-up will be this coming september. and i can't wait much longer. i am very worried for me and my baby...
thanks so much...

This question reminded me of my own pregnancy 12 years ago and brought a smile to my face. I craved so much chocolate and sweets that I used to have chocolate in every room in the house "just in case". Heck I even had some under my bed...lol.

I took the diabetes blood test (I forget at how many weeks) and I was fine. The baby was also fine (although the now 11 year old boy loves chocolate and sweets).

I have lots of diabetes in my family also. If you are doing the "one touch" blood sugar test and it's fine, then you are fine. Those glucometers are very accurate.

Good luck with the pregnancy and enjoy your sweets....just remember to eat your veggies too ;)

You will soon be taking the prenatal glucose tolerance test which will give you a definite result either way.

I know sugar cravings are hard to beat - especially when you're pregnant - but do try to cut down the sugar. Try sweeting your food with stevia, it is really sweet but contains no sugar and is 100% natural (it's a herb). I use it all the time.

If you do need something sweet go for the least refined sugars possible: black strap molasses, honey, treacle or raw sugar. Also opt for sugar-free options like sugar-free chocolates, diet soft drinks etc. But don't over do these as they can give you the runs!

If you like, you could see a naturopath to help you deal with the sugar cravings. It could be due to a chromium deficiency, in which case a supplement will help.

And don't worry so much.

Good luck.

they usually test for gestational diabetes around 28 weeks. don't worry about it so much, chances are you won't have it. sometimes the pregnancy books do more harm than good if you are already paranoid about your pregnancy. a few cookies won't hurt if your diet is generally healthy. the worst that will happen is you will pack on extra weight that is hard to lose after the baby comes. my vice was drinking pepsi while i was pregnant. of course one or two glasses a day didn't hurt, just try not to overdo it with the chocolate. and if you do have gestational diabetes, the doctor will tell you what to do. it will all be fine. enjoy being pregnant, it's a very special time when you have the baby all to yourself. and stop worrying.

Stop researching things Stop researching things Stop researching things!!!!!!!!!

Seriously. That was my biggest problem when I was pregnant. I would research everything and scare the crap out of myself. Neither you nor your baby need the stress that brings. Women have been having babies since long before the internet, and even before books and doctors! It's good to be informed, but don't dig into everything and drive yourself nuts. Try to calm down. Congratulations!!!!

EDIT- Everyone putting you down for eating sweets while pregnant is either uptight or completely full of crap (most likely the latter)! No one lives on rabbit food during pregnancy. You should be enjoying this time. Having some cake or a cookie is really not that big a deal and is not going to cause diabetes. People are so uptight!

Calm down and ask your doctor or midwife for your glucose tolerance test asap. I am a bit surprised it hasn't been ordered yet. Try to find healthier alternatives to your cravings, such as; carob covered almonds or raisins, or yogurt covered fruits and nuts. Also drinking small glasses of juice throughout the day will often curb a sweet cravings and is much healthier than junk foods. Try to make your calorie/cravings nutritionally sound. Self checking blood sugar is ok but it is important to have it done under specific conditions and the results interpreted by a knowledgeable health care professional.

It is great that you have the Accucheck. As long as you follow the directions, it should be pretty accurate. I would log your results and share them with your doctor, as that's some useful information that most Moms don't collect. It will reassure your doctor that you don't have gestational diabetes as well.

It's normal to crave things while pregnant. I craved salt mostly, myself. Potato chips and pickles.

I suspect the book that may have been worrying you is "What to expect while you're expecting." It started making me mental about my food, so I quit reading it. I much preferred The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy. I read lots of other books while I was pregnant, I wish I could remember what they were! My favorite reference book was The Baby Book by Dr. Sears. There is some stuff on pregnancy and childbirth in there, as well as information on the first 2 years of baby's life.

It's very common to have discharge (or cervical fluid, when you wish to be PC ) BUT if the release appears like cottage cheese (clumps of white as an alternative than creamy-lotiony) then, this can be a yeast illness and an over the counter treatment can aid (canesten, monistat...and many others) ensure to pick the person who takes a couple of software, You will have to opt for the 7 day one, simply to be definite. Discharge via out the cycle alterations: proper after the interval ends, the release could also be plenty like lotion, creamy, tender. Closer to ovulation, it turns into clearer (however now not assured) and slippery. As quickly as you ovulate, the fluid turns into thick and sticky. A well publication to learn is "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility". Some females have plenty of fluid, a few have none. As you'll get towards menopause, matters will dry up. Hope this is helping!

Your doctor should have gotten you tested for gestational diabetes around 28 weeks. Its called Glucose Tolerance Test, you drink a pint of sugar water and an hour later, they draw blood from your arm.

If you haven't gotten this yet, I would suggest you ask your doctor. Especially because diabetes runs in your family.

Try not to worry too much.

I ate sweets like CRAZY during my pregnancy. I have hypothyroidism which means I'm high risk for developing diabetes while being pregnant.

I never got it. So, try to relax. What I did when I craved chocolates and sweets. I bought fruits. It definitely helped my sweet cravings. Or buy chocolate covered raisins. :)

if you do have it im sry for you its kind of hard my mother has it. for the baby i dont think it should harm the baby too much but its probably best to get regular tests and cut down on the treats.

Dont worry, your baby will be okay and if you get gestational diabetes there is a lot of new technology. such as breath inhaled medicine instead of shots

I actually was tested for that my last visit. I am also about 28 weeks and I go back for my results tomorrow. I thought the test was normal due to how far along I was. You should ask your doctor to test you. they had me drink this red drink and not eat for one hour then draw blood. It was a simple test. Check on it.

you should be getting tested for diabetes soon during your pregnancy, than you'll know if you have it. If you don't enjoy eating the sweets while you're pregnant

Just try to slow down on the sweets. I know it's hard but it's the best for you and your little one

Think of your sweets like smoking or drinking to help you not do it. Chocolate is bad for the baby because of the caffeine in it. Make sure you are exercising.

Stop reading the pregnancy books that are making you scared and worried. Then you won't be as scared and worried any more.

Your Dr. should have tested you for that at 20 weeks or so. It is standard, did he?

Apparently you aren't scared enough, neither for yourself, nor for the child you are carrying. How old are you? 12???? Use some self control.. it gets dicey from now to birth.

A healthy mom produces a healthy baby.... Eat healthy, hon, and delete the crap out of your diet.... Your baby deserves the best... a healthy diet from its mom.

Care for you self, so that you can care for your baby... and see your obgyn often.
