first to explain what nitrazine paper is...It is just pH paper yellow is acidic and blue is basic. The reason it is used is because Urine is acidic and amniotic fluid is very basic. Sometimes (unfortunatly) women far along in pregnancy will accidently pee on themselves or have urine leakage (heck you have an 8 lb baby jumping up and down on your bladder!) and will think their water broke - so the nitrazine paper can tell the difference...

Now, the draw backs are that sometimes urine can be slightly basic (make it green/light blue and this will vary from urination to urination), also some regular vaginal discharge can be slightly basic, semen is also basic and can mess up the test. So here's what usually happens, or how i do it (I'm a Labor and Delivery Nurse) - first we do the perinem....that will pick up all discharge and Urine if it's wet with it...then we check the vagina...put a strip on our fingers and go into the vagina to check the vaginal discharge. After that we check the pt and ballot the head (bounce it up and down...if the water is broken then fluid will spill out around the baby's head) but if we don't get a lot of fluid return then we can nitrazine our fingers when they are out and see if it's just discharge or fluid. Anyway - I'm sure you loved that description...

Also light blue really isn't positive...it's called "equivical" which means neither positive or negative...means you can't tell so we have to do it again... Usually it's best after you've peed because you have wiped away all the discharge and stuff around your vagina...

I know that was a long drawn out answer but I hope it helps answer your question.

I had a little scare at 37 weeks with this, and they told me that for it to be positive, the little strip would be nearly black (which I'm guessing is the same as dark blue). Mine was negative of course. But rest assured that there's NOWAY they would send you home if you were leaking amniotic fluid.

From what I've heard, even a slow leak..is a pretty substantial leak. If you're REALLY freaking out over this..call your doctor. It's his job to keep you calm and informed :-D Good luck.
